The 53rd annual American Petroleum Institute (API) golf tournament will be played once again at Tempest Golf Club on Friday, June 10.

It’s a four-person scramble, 18 holes of play, limited to 36 teams for a morning flight and an afternoon flight both that day.

Check-in for the morning flight will be 6 a.m. for a 7 a.m. start, and then that afternoon, it’s a 1 p.m. start. Playing times will be dealt on a first-come, first-serve basis. Food, drawings and contests will be on hand, and Tempest Golf Club drink carts will provide beverages throughout the tournament. Awards will be presented after each round.

The API, and its East Texas chapter, is the only national trade association that represents all aspects of America’s oil and natural gas industry. The East Texas chapter provides scholarships to children of individuals affiliated with the oil and gas industry, accordingly.

For more about the tournament, see their Facebook page (East Texas API), their website (easttexasapi.com) and upcoming editions of the News Herald. For more on Tempest Golf Club, see the course’s website, tempestgolfclub.com.

Kilgore College will host the annual Willie Gooden / Kilgore College Rangers Football Skills Camp June 6-10 here at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium, for ages seven through 15.

The camp is non-contact, and taught by KC head football coach Willie Gooden and his championship staff – Keith Browning, Russell Thompson, Paul Burgos, Zac Newbell, Tim Chura and Luke Alexander. The camp teaches kids the fundamentals of football. Players will be divided into groups according to age and position, taught individual skills, and most of all, placed into a fun environment.

Awards will be presented each day, and campers will receive a camp certificate and a KC football. The registration fee for the camp is $125. Professional medical trainers will be on duty at all times.

Campers should wear attire appropriate for football in the East Texas heat, and should arrive daily between 7:30 a.m. to begin camp at 8:30 a.m., and be picked up between 11:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

For more information, or to download a registration form, go to the college’s website, kilgore.edu, then to the Ranger athletics link, then to the football option, then to summer skills camp.

Annual Hoberecht/KC camp July 11-14

It’s time again to register for the annual Kilgore College-Coach Brian Hoberecht boys basketball camp, and this year, camp will be July 11 through July 14, here on campus at Masters Gymnasium, home of the Rangers, who have made back-to-back appearances in the NJCAA Men’s National Basketball Tournament and three appearances in the tournament under coach Hoberecht.

The camp is for boys ages five through 17, and camp is daily from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Registration is the first day, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the gym, and the fee for the week per camper is $100. For that, campers get a camp ball, a T-shirt, lunch each day, and awards are presented. Concessions are open each day during break and snacks and drinks will be priced at a low cost.

Of course, the camp will be conducted by coach Hoberecht, the award-winning coach of KC’s program and the NJCAA Division I men’s all-star coach this year, and his assistant coaches. The remaining staff will be made up of other college coaches and current KC players.

Parents, all campers will be required to be in the gym at all times, and if a camper needs to leave during the day for any reason, please let the staff know in advance.

Campers should bring proper attire for basketball – gym shorts, shirt, socks and shoes, and a limited amount of money for concessions during breaks.

KC men’s basketball hosts

Like the softball program, coach Brian Hoberecht and the Rangers men’s basketball team will host a tryout this summer.

Tryouts are open for any college men’s basketball player with eligibility remaining. They will be held Saturday, July 16 at Masters Gymnasium on the KC campus. Registration is $20, and begins at noon, with the tryout to follow at 1 p.m.

Athletes trying out should bring proper basketball gear: shoes, T-shirts and shorts. Water will be provided by KC.

For more information, contact the basketball office at (903) 983-8270.
